  Tegene Kunbi was born in Addis Abeba and grew-up in the Ethiopian capital. With a constant view on his native landscape, clothing and mural painting and his African roots, he designs rhythmical compositions which are impressive because of their shimmering colorfulness. Kunbi transfers the variety of landscapes and daily structures in a kind of grid field and releases himself from the real subject. Similar to Paul Klee´s Egyptian landscapes in the late 1920s (e.g. Paul Klee: “primary route and bypasses”; “Hauptweg und Nebenwege”, 1929) he reduces them to their basic forms which for Kunbi do express themselves, especially in triangles and squares. Kunbi finds these forms in his African homeland and in Europe. Whether it is the geometric structure of a construction scaffolding, a religious talisman or the narrowness of crowded together cottages, the artist always sticks to the natural colors of things, in which monochrome compositions are just as possible as rich in contrast opposites. Within a fixed form the artist mostly develops rhythmic structures and spaces, which is characterized by the deliberate superimposition of forms and colors, as well as the diversity of the brush strokes, seeming to lose in a subtle dimensionality and always refer to their reference point. Each color zone is identified as a unique area which is in close contact with the original form. Works of Tegene Kunbi do testify a quite high attention to one´s own environment, which change and develop with it. Born in 1980 in Ethiopia, he graduated from 1998 to 2004 at the Addis Abeba University in Ethiopia for his Fine Arts studies. Since 2008, he studied painting under Professor Frank Badur at the Berlin Fine Arts University, the “Universität der Künste Berlin”. Since 2009 he is a master class student under Professor Pia Fries and Professor Frank Badur. 2007 – 9 he received the Daad scholarship.
